Republic Day 2023: History, Significance and Celebration

Why India Celebrate 26th January as Republic day:
On 26th January 1950 the Constitution of India came into effect by replacing Government of India Act 1935. It was an act adopted from the Parliament of the United Kingdom. The Indian Independent Act transferred legislative authority to the Constituent Assembly. The Constituent Assembly held its first session on 9th December 1946 and established a committee led by Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar (Minister of State for Law and Justice, Government Of India) to draft the Constitution. The draft was publicly debated and adjusted in the assembly for 166 days spanning 2 years, 11 months 18 days and finally on 26th November 1949 the Indian Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution and on 26th January 1950 the constitution came into effect and India became a democratic republic and union of states. On that day Dr. Rajendra Prasad began his first term as President of India and the Constitute Assembly became the Parliament of India.  January 26 was selected because on 26th January 1930, Indian National Congress proclaimed Purna Swaraj (a call for India’s complete Independence from the colonial rule).
Republic day is different from Independence day. India declared independence from British raj on 15th August 1947
